Biography

Dr Wing Yee Cheung is Senior Lecturer in Psychology. She holds a BA Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Hong Kong, a MSc Research Methods in Psychology from the University of Bristol and a PhD Psychology from Cardiff University.

E.g. nostalgia, sadness, disgust. My work on emotion examines how various emotions motivate and regulate a range of behaviours. I have investigated how nostalgia, an ostensibly past oriented emotion, bolsters motivation in the present and fosters a positive outlook of the future. My colleagues and I have demonstrated that nostalgia (1) regulates approach and avoidance motivation, (2) regulates the simultaneous pursuit of multiple goals, (3) fosters optimism, (4) boosts inspiration, and (5) engenders a sense of self continuity. These findings have broader implications for collective actions.

Social values

E.g. benevolence, achievement. My research on social values investigates the motivational dynamics of values and their implications on prosocial and pro-environmental behaviours. Specifically, I have experimentally primed values and assessed the effects of these value primes on behaviours that are congruent and incongruent with the primed values. I have found, for example, that when proself values (e.g., achievement) are primed, not only do proself behaviours increase, but prosocial behaviours decrease. I have additionally investigated the influences of prosocial values and attitudes towards humanity on pro-environmental concerns. This work has illustrated that among individuals who endorse prosocial values less strongly, inducing positive (vs negative) attitudes towards humanity leads to weaker behavioural intentions to protect the environment.
