The Right Revd David Williams studied Social Policy at Bristol University and after some years working with CMS in Kenya, trained for the ordained ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He worked for twelve years in Sheffield, both as a Vicar and also as Chaplain to Aldine House Secure Unit.  He has lived in Hampshire since 2001 – as Vicar of Christ Church, Winchester (The Parish Church of the University) and since 2014 as Bishop of Basingstoke.  For 13 years he was a near neighbour to the University.  He has had an active engagement with the University since 2001.   He chairs a local multi-academy trust and has a strong interest in education.

David grew up in Uganda and retains strong links with East Africa, with a particular commitment to the Democratic Republic of Congo.  He has made several strategic visits to the DRC and is the emissary of the Archbishop of Congo in the UK.  Together with his son, Mark, he completed 2 long motorbike journeys across Eastern and Central Africa in 2010 and 2012.  The development of the University in  the 21st century has been remarkable and its impact on Winchester and Hampshire something to celebrate.
